Mother's Day is a chance to express appreciation for all kinds of mothering - given by not only by our mothers-in-name, but also by grandmothers, godmothers, sisters, friends and even, yes, fathers! At the heart of mothering is the willingness to nurture - to want the best, truest life for another. Many of us send Mother's Day cards to other people's mothers, because we honor and appreciate their mothering for the positive effects on us and others around them. Who has not basked in glimpsing a mother-and-child embrace or a moment's shared comfort or laughter? Who has not been mothered at a crucial time by a friend or teacher, or even a momentary encounter with a stranger? Motherers - with their freely-given, unconditional love, are healers of us all!
